How does the virtual Scholars Programme work?
How will the tutorials work?
If the tutorials are taking place during the school day with students in school, but the tutor is not attending in person, then the tutor will deliver the Tutor Launch and tutorials to your students remotely. We would ask that the classroom provided either has a projector to show the tutor on screen, along with a computer with working webcam and microphone to allow for interaction, or that students have their own or a shared laptop where they can see the screen, and again that there is a working webcam or microphone. A working microphone is important so that students can ask questions as they would do during an in-school tutorial. We ask that students are supervised during the tutorials.
Where some or all students are at home for the tutorial, students will also be able to join the tutorials remotely. Students can access the Tutor Launch and tutorial links via the Student Hub. If students are accessing remotely, please encourage them to have their cameras and microphones on to ensure interactivity in the tutorial. Additionally, we record these tutorials to provide a safeguarding oversight given that students are not in their usual school environment. These recordings will be kept for two months by The Brilliant Club.
Should you have any questions or concerns about running tutorials virtually, please speak with your Programme Officer.
Preparing for Virtual Tutorials
Your Programme Officer will send to you the link for students’ virtual tutorials and guidance documents to support you with preparing for the tutorials. Please check that the devices you will be using are working and that you have tested a tutorial link before tutorials are due to take place. Programme Officers will be able to support with any questions.
Tutor Training
All tutors who will be delivering virtual tutorials will receive training on adapting their course and teaching for online delivery as well as updated safeguarding training.
Virtual Tutorials Structure
To ensure that we are adhering to safeguarding best practices and that students get the most out of their Virtual Scholars Programme, the structure of Tutorials 6 and 7 run slightly differently for virtual placements.
As with in-school tutorials, Tutorials 1-5 will be small group sessions. The tutor will deliver the session content virtually, delivering to group A and group B back-to-back. Tutorials will last 60 minutes.
As we cannot allow tutors to meet with students one-to-one online, Tutorials 6 and 7 will also be group feedback tutorials so again, the tutor will meet two groups of seven students. Tutors will provide individual written feedback on the Hub in advance of these tutorials and spend the tutorial time providing group feedback. In Tutorial 6, tutors will focus on essay writing skills to support students to improve their draft assignments, and in Tutorial 7 tutors will encourage students to reflect on the skills they have gained and how to use their experience in the future.
The outline for the tutorial structure can be found below. Should you have any questions about this, please get in touch with your Programme Officer.
