How do the tutorials work?

The programme begins with an Online Launch Event hosted by The Brilliant Club followed by the Tutor Launch delivered by tutors. The main content of the course is delivered in Tutorials 1-5, then Tutorials 6 and 7 are dedicated to feedback on the draft and final assignment respectively. Between tutorials, the students will be set homework and independent research to complete. The following table outlines core information regarding tutorials.

Tutorial Dates and Times

Dates and times are suggested according to the availability you provide to The Brilliant Club, and students’ availability. We will suggest dates to you in the first instance and, once confirmed with you, pass them onto the school. Please reserve the times until schools can confirm them, though be aware they may need to be tweaked.

Tutorials usually take place during the school day, so please note that schools will find rescheduling at short notice incredibly challenging.

Tutorial Length

You will deliver tutorials 1-5 in two groups, so two school lessons. Tutorials can range from 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the length of lessons at the school you are working with,. These usually take place back-to-back but there might be a break in-between depending on school timetables.

Tutorials 6 and 7 are an opportunity for students to receive 1-2-1 feedback. During Tutorial 6 and 7, you will have 8-10 minutes to provide feedback to each student. The school should arrange a slot for each student.

Group Size Standard placements are 14 students, split into two groups of seven.
Registers

Must be completed on the Hub within 24 hours of every tutorial.

It is important that we have a record of attendance for child safeguarding and so that we can monitor student engagement.

Homework

Homework should be set for each tutorial. Please ensure you set aside time in each tutorial to review homework and set the next task.

Please provide homework feedback on the Hub or in your next tutorial. Students should submit on the Hub, so they get used to using it regularly. If students do not have access to an IT device, then they are welcome to bring their homework to the next tutorial, or to send their work to schools@thebrilliantclub.org.

Placement Updates Key to a successful placement are effective collaboration and regular communication between the lead teacher, PhD Tutor and Programme Officer. If you do not see your lead teacher after each tutorial, please send them a brief update on students’ progress so they can support them. You can do this via email or the ‘engagement comment’ on the Hub (tutorial register page.) Please note that teachers may not always be able to reply but will appreciate these updates, nonetheless.
Placement Concerns If there are any issues with attendance, homework submission, or use of the Hub, please raise them with your Lead Teacher as soon as possible. Copy your Programme Officer into all correspondence so that we can find the most appropriate ways to support your placement.
Classrooms

The rooms booked for your tutorials will depend on the spaces available at school and conversations you have with your lead teacher in advance. The facilities available will depend on the school, so make sure to discuss this with your lead teacher before your first tutorial.

Please note that teachers are not usually required to sit in tutorials, but sometimes like to find out more about your course. There may also be school-specific safeguarding policies that require a member of staff to be present.

DBS Check Please take your DBS certificate and a photo ID every time you visit your placement school. Some schools will not be able to allow you to work with the students without showing this at reception each time.
