How do virtual tutorials work?

The programme structure will remain broadly the same, with tutors delivering the Tutor Launch followed by the main content of the course in Tutorials 1-5, then Tutorials 6 and 7 which are dedicated to feedback on the draft and final assignment respectively. The main difference will be that the tutorials are delivered online via Microsoft Teams.

How will the tutorials work?

The Brilliant Club will set up your virtual tutorials on Microsoft Teams and your Programme Officer will send you the links and login details to access the tutorials. You will also be provided with detailed guidance on how to use the platform and top tips on how to deliver online tutorials. Students may access the tutorials from one device, or from individual devices. This will vary between schools so ideally tutors should discuss this with the lead teacher in advance of tutorials beginning. Where students are accessing the tutorials in school, we ask that, as a minimum, they organise a webcam and microphone for the students so that you can see the students and they can ask questions.

In a situation where some or all students are at home, students will also be able to join the tutorials remotely.

If you have any concerns regarding the technology or student engagement, please get in touch with your Programme Officer. They will be able to suggest next steps and can support with this.

Tutor Training

If you are asked to deliver your tutorials remotely, we will ask you to watch a short online training video on delivering tutorials online. You can find it on our website here. Please see the email from your Programme Officer with details on how to access this.

Virtual Tutorial Structure

To ensure that we are adhering to safeguarding best practices and that students get the most out of their virtual Scholars Programme, we have changed the structure of Tutorials 6 and 7 slightly for virtual placements. As we cannot allow tutors to meet with students one-to-one online, Tutorials 6 and 7 will be group feedback tutorials so tutors will meet students in tutorial groups, as they will have done for Tutorials 1-5. Tutors will provide individual written feedback on the Hub in advance and spend the tutorial providing group feedback and guidance to support students with their academic work. Further guidance for providing group feedback and resources to support with this session will be provided by your Programme Officer nearer the time.
