Tutor Launches

What is the Tutor Launch?

The Tutor Launch is the first time that students will meet their PhD tutor.  It will take place in school and has been designed to ensure that tutor and students have time to get to know each other, understand the programme and the specific course that they will study together, and to look ahead and consider some of the differences between school style learning and university study. Students will also be asked to login to The Hub and to make some pledges about how they will approach the programme.

When will the Tutor Launch take place?

The Tutor Launch will take place during your first tutorial slot, as detailed in your Placement Schedule which will be emailed to you by your Programme Officer.  All students taking part in the programme are expected to attend a single launch which will last for one hour.

Why have I been asked to provide laptops or a computer room?

Our data shows us that students who access The Hub are significantly more likely to complete and submit their final assignment.  We know that ensuring that students can access The Hub takes up a lot of your time as well as a lot of tutor time.  Because of this, we’ve dedicated the last 15 minutes of the Tutor Launch to showing student show to use The Hub.  They will use this time to log on, to gain an overview of some of The Hub’s different features as well as to make and share some pledges about how they will approach the programme.

Who needs to be present at the Tutor Launch?

All students taking part in the programme, the tutor, and the Lead Teacher or another member of school staff should be present.  This will make sure that the programme starts well and that everyone has a great overview of what to expect.

What resources need to be made available for the Tutor Launch?

Students should have their usual equipment to make any notes that they’d like to, access to a computer or laptop, and their login details to The Hub.  The Lead Teacher, or another member of school staff, should also have a list of student logins to ensure that students can be supported to access to The Hub if they need it.  For Data Protection reasons, it is not appropriate for tutors to be given a list of student logins.

What should Lead Teachers do following the Tutor Launch?

Lead Teachers will be asked to complete an evaluation of the Tutor Launch as soon as possible after it has taken place.  During the Tutor Launch, students will be asked to make some pledges and upload them on The Hub.  If possible, Lead Teachers could print these pledges and make them available for future tutorials.
